During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
