Similarly, the communities of Mayo and Dawson experienced 16 consecutive nights colder than minus 40 degrees, with Mayo plunging to -50.4C earlier this week. Whitehorse also recorded 10 nights when readings fell to minus 30 degrees or lower.
The bitter chill extended its reach south during the holiday season. On Christmas Day, overnight temperatures in Edmonton fell below -28C.
December 26th was anticipated to usher in readings no higher than -20 Celsius through a wide swath, including Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec.
The severe cold is forecast to persist into the new year. Authorities have cautioned about potential power failures in the Yukon over the next several days, as the system endures record-high pressure from record-high energy demand.

Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last through Boxing Day and the days ahead, with atypical high temperatures expected to spread across the southeastern US in the coming days.
The unseasonable temperatures are powered by a strong upper-level ridge extending from the desert south-west towards the north and east, establishing a classic heat-dome pattern. This pattern establishes a broad area of high pressure blanketing a significant part of the landmass, effectively capping warm air at lower altitudes. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, enabling abnormally high temperatures to develop.
