Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The video footage, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in military or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to defend and support this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you should decline improper directives. No one has to execute directives that break the legal system or our founding principles."
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a heated response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats released a joint announcement censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our country with tremendous national pride and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the protection of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical social media posts and withdraw his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the statement stated.
The officials who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this United States and took an oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the former president deems it punishable by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "Every American must join forces and denounce the former president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of Congress telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also reportedly stated to the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."
During a White House press conference on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the official stated. "You have sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically encouraging."
