Tale claims that during 1920, Bhupinder Singh, was set that his cricket team would succeed over a touring English squad. To gain the upper hand, he threw a lavish party the night before the match, at which he served his guests the notorious Patiala pegs. These are notoriously generous four-finger whisky pours, traditionally poured from pinky to index finger. As expected, the English players drank too much, resulting in them being terribly hungover and, consequently, beaten the following day. And so, the legend of the Patiala peg originated.
This inspired variation of Old Fashioned cocktail takes its cue from the Maharaja's concoction. Here, we serve it from a bespoke five-litre bottle, but we've modified the formula to make it more suitable for a domestic environment.
Makes 1 litre, serving 10-12 portions.
Put everything in a big container. Include 130g water, agitate until fully incorporated, then place it in the refrigerator. You can store it for about a few weeks.
To serve, pour approximately 90ml of the Patiala peg mixture into a old fashioned glass packed with ice (traditionally one large cube). Drink straight away. To honour tradition, you could pour it using your fingers instead.
