Ex British Soldier Charged of Killing Kenyan Female Appears in Court

A suspect has been presented in court as deportation processes commenced in the investigation of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a woman of Kenyan origin who was murdered near a British army base in the year 2012.

The accused Robert Purkiss, 38, who is hailing from Greater Manchester, appeared before Westminster magistrates court on the last Friday, and told the court he intended to contest the extradition request. Reports indicate that he was arrested on the evening of Thursday.

A warrant for arrest for Purkiss was authorized by a court in Nairobi in September. Legal prosecutors stated before the Kenyan court that the accused had been charged with a sole charge, of murder, and that the Kenyan government would pursue his extradition to stand trial.

Purkiss was once employed as a medical attendant with the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, the military regiment for the northwestern England, including on missions to Afghanistan.

Agnes Wanjiru, 21, a hairdresser who had a young daughter, disappeared after a night out, and her corpse was found two months later in the premises of the hotel where she had previously spotted.

No one had before been taken into custody or accused in relation to her passing. His detention was the result of a fresh police investigation, which was initiated after a report in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the newspaper contacted several active and retired troops in the regiment.

The probe has been led by detectives in Kenya, which, under a bilateral defence agreement, retains jurisdiction in the case.
