Flight Disruptions in America Expected to Intensify, Transportation Secretary Warns

American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," he said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching north to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice went out at 08:45 local time on Sunday. Numerous trips were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the US, could experience difficulties from reduced staff in the afternoon.
