Personalities from both sides of the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.
The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
âWhat a vile and despicable comment,â said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the statements. She referenced previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his political party to defend the comments.
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, thereâs a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.
Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
