Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
