The state AG has introduced a fresh reporting form encouraging locals to share visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This step follows a day after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting mass outcry.
A US congressman announced during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were arrested and held for "about 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen is entitled to live without fear," state officials wrote in a statement.
"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity recently, I ask you to provide that material with the authorities. We are pledged to examining these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."
The form provides options to submit photos and videos of the incident, as well as a field to specify location information. Prior to sending, individuals must check a box that acknowledges that "authorities may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a court case or official statement."
The enforcement action, which observers say featured over fifty federal agents, happened in a well-known area of NYC where imitation products and merchandise are sold daily en masse – often to tourists.
Videos of the incident reveal several masked and armed officers restraining and arresting a individual, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of New Yorkers pursued the personnel down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
At a Wednesday press conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be arrested for no reason." He said the persons were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman remarked. "This is a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is purely a excuse to incite violence for the government to deploy the armed forces to halt violence that they have created."
Outrage over the immigration operation quickly spread – all three NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the raid, along with NY's governor.
"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for oppressive displays that create fear, instead of protection. It has to end," a contender wrote.
New York City community groups expressed outrage as well.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on street vendors working to survive. This operation had no relation to public safety and everything to do with frightening communities and neighborhoods," remarked the head of a advocacy group.
Official guidelines forbids the holding of citizens and the organization has claimed it does not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by ICE since the start of the existing leadership.
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in NY and nationwide this year.
An October operation in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are widespread including accusations of violence and cruel conditions.
Latest, a letter filed by legal entities claimed medical neglect of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
