Well, how did you experience this year in your household? Was it entirely positive as you pretended on social media? Overflowing with top marks for the children and wild themed fancy dress birthday parties for the parents? Or perhaps it was a sea of disappointment with only rare entertaining highlights? Could any part be genuine, or are we all seven-fingered virtual entities with unrealistic teeth?
I've assembled my thoughts for a reflection, ready or not, to reflect on the crucial thing in twelve months: which releases we enjoyed the most. Without further ado:
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my definitive list."
In the mobile realm, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "attempting to locate reasonable healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In reality."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Point taken.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was playing Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a successful utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has in the real world.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can grow up and play games for mature audiences. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is a machine. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted card game competitive game, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you have a moment of clarity and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into compulsion-based microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could dispatch my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just lacked the time or headspace to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Balatro
I know Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was a late adopter. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so creative it has become a game I would happily play any time. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a technical issue in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I recognized even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that verbatim, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". Great fun. I get that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and I'm over it. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Close call between business deals that sparked debate, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and repugnant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names called from the garden at dinner time.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or doomscrolling, but it aches like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
The Witcher 4.
