Suspected Bondi Attackers Acted Solo and Did Not Preparation in the Philippines, Investigators Confirm.

The pair of accused gunmen who carried out the fatal incident at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, reportedly been lone actors, as stated by Australian police.

Police also confirmed that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, 24, travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included arriving in the main city Manila before connecting on the day of arrival to Davao City. The pair flew back to Sydney on 29 November.

No Evidence of Planning During Stay

Police indicate the pair did not partake in any type of terrorist instruction or "logistical preparation" during their time in the Philippines. Initial investigations from local officials indicate they "rarely left" their hotel.

The incident—labeled as Australia's deadliest firearm massacre since 1996—has been formally classified as a terrorist incident.

"We are actively reviewing the material," she stated, explaining that initial assessments show that "these individuals are suspected to have operated independently."

Australian Federal Police Chief Krissy Barrett told the press on Tuesday that surveillance material tracking the alleged gunmen's whereabouts in the Philippines had been handed over to domestic authorities.

"There is little to no indication to indicate these alleged offenders were affiliated with a wider network, or were instructed by external parties to perpetrate an incident," the police chief stated.

Yet, the duo were additionally not necessarily in the Philippines on a leisure trip, she clarified. She underscored that, given that the probe is continuing, new evidence may surface.

Ideology and Court Proceedings

In prior statements, Australian leader Anthony Albanese said it looks as though both alleged gunmen were "influenced by Islamic State" ideology.

During the incident, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying long-barrelled guns—allegedly targeted guests at the Jewish festival event.

Naveed Akram, who was hospitalised after the attack, has been charged with 59 offences. These include 15 charges of murder and one count of committing a act of terrorism. He is due to face court in April.

Immigration Information

In the wake following the shooting, immigration authorities in the Philippines reported that the older suspect had arrived in the country using an Indian passport, while his son used an domestic passport.

The two had listed the metropolis of Davao as their final destination. Their pre-arranged return flight to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a sprawling metropolis on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' largest southern island. Historically, Militant fighters have reportedly be active in less developed parts of southern and western Mindanao.
