The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the popular program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
