Among all the adult-oriented animated films I’ve ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the dread-soaked finale of the viscerally violent and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spanish writer-director created a dark, somber and frequently brutal universe with a few small , desolate twinges of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it originated from a desire to advance animation even more, the filmmaker explained that it was rather a try to communicate a widespread, cross-cultural theme regarding “the common origin of every conflict.”
This theme is expressed via a group of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly inspired by a well-known line of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a community centered on militarism as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are fixated on exterminating unicorns, thanks to a holy book which states them they used to be masters of the forest, until these creatures drove them out.
Some have not completely fallen for the propaganda, and choose to experiment with drugs and engage sexually in the forest.
Unlike their cuddly equivalents, these colorful critters display sexual organs , clear libidos.
For a certain particularly cruel, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns becomes a path toward dominance — and particularly to supremacy over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
Bluey is a bully , an apparent psychopath , and when terror dominates his unit and kills his fellow soldiers sequentially, he grabs progressively control personally, in increasingly bloody, destructive ways.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are experiencing their own nightmare, as a spreading, destructive monster in their woods.
“Initially, it appears as a comedy,” the filmmaker commented. “However it evolves into a more dramatic and melancholic movie. And ultimately, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars begins similar to among the quirky features from an iconic filmmaker, that discover a naughty glee in permitting animated figures curse, engage in violence, or engage sexually.
Then it turns into something more like a more grim movie by that same creator, featuring progressively graphic violence and a palpable link to the actual suffering of conflict.
In the finale, it’s a complete theatrical horror carnage.
The fear which makes this a perfect Halloween watch kicks in a lot earlier than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated fans of gore, for lovers of intense movies who wish to watch something they have not viewed until now, and are able to withstand a story that offers no restraint.
View it with the lights off without any distractions, and that ending will burrow deep within you and stay with you.
