Citizens have assembled throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the agreement.

A prominent representative familiar with the talks said that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source stated the day's discussions ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Post-war management of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will be secure."

"Once we see all home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.

Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their support for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis desire the war to end in exchange for the release of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"As the evening comes, the dread comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of the city said another two fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the southern area, medics said.

The territory's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
