Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
