The popular online game known as Warframe, an experience where you might encounter bizarre cosmic entities and drive a motorcycle in the year 1999, has released a major update. The Vallis Undermind highlights the unique whimsy that has become synonymous with Warframe in recent years.
This expansion, released on Wednesday, adds a fungus-inspired character that performs a unique animation, along with a whole new explorable fungal area. But itâs also going back to basics, with a new mission designed to making sure this complex, vast 12-year-old MMO is accessible for new players.
Named âThe Teacher,â this is the long-awaited quest that trains Warframe players on how to use one of the game's most basic â yet most intricate systems: modding.
In Warframe, mods are augments that can be added to your character or your weapons to enhance their abilities. They range from the straightforward (increase damage or speed up reload rate) to the incredibly intricate. Content creators often craft hour-long videos about optimized loadouts that use synergistic enhancements to create overwhelming power.
âI think a lot of people were maybe getting into the early game, encountering mods without grasping their purpose,â explained a lead narrative designer. âI think it was really important, upon completing the mission, for players to think, âWow, modding is interesting. I'd like to experiment further.ââ
âThe Teacherâ was developed in a collaboration between the core team, who provided the narrative sauce, and a supporting studio, who designed the mission, which will be introduced to new players.
In the quest, the player is tasked with obtaining a new segment for their spaceship, but theyâre confronted by a formidable foe called Teshin, who takes away the playerâs abilities and close-combat arms, and compels them to use the mod system to handily demonstrate its power.
Many of the external team were longtime players, but others had never played before, according to a principal games designer. It was this outside perspective that proved critical.
âOur initial step involved observing new players and have them experience the introduction and take prodigious notes on all points of confusion,â the designer said. Introductory tutorials presented the mod system. But the team noted that they didnât work on everyone.
âCertain players missed fundamental guidance where the game highlights it saying equip the modification,â he said.
Warframeâs mods allow players to create stupidly powerful synergies that fill the display with damage values. But "The Teacher" isnât really about that. Veteran users who wish the quest was geared more towards their needs, like creating powerful and specific builds. But it became clear that the mission addresses a genuine oversight for early players â and that executing this is quite complex.
âNumerous subtle adjustments and little subtle things in the background there to just demonstrate the possibilities rather than explain it outright,â the designer said. For example, one of the mission's objectives is to show how mods can create elemental damage types; in this case, Magnetic damage that eats chunks out of enemy shields.
âWe had to change the weapon to be a rapid-fire gun, because it better demonstrates the effect frequency,â the designer said. âHowever, the goal isn't to say to people, 'with a basic modification, you only got a low probability to trigger a special damage type.' So how do you tutorialize that without changing it?â
Experienced players will naturally recognize these mechanics and understand how it works, but new players have to be taught to pay attention to these things.
âThis type of design work that we've had to worry about as much just because our priorities lay elsewhere,â said a story developer. âBut part of it not being our focus that players weren't properly taught the modding system.â
âA tremendous amount of work is required for just making a seemingly straightforward quest that â honestly â you can blast through in about 15 minutes,â said the designer. âYet it represents extensive development for loads of people.â
The designer was clearly enthusiastic over being able to work on a game that he loves â and to craft a mission for one of his favorite characters.
âI'm a huge fan of Teshin,â he said. âHe embodies everything my younger self found awesome.â
In the 12 years since its release, Warframe has been in a ongoing struggle with its own player onboarding process. There are lots of complex systems that players can ignore initially â and won't encounter until much later. And others, like modding, that scale in complexity depending on how much time you want to invest. A previous patch improved the introductory experience so that players could reach Warframeâs complex narrative arcs with less time on the grind up front.
With âThe Teacher,â itâs clear that the developers are reinforcing their dedication to make sure Warframeâs initial hours doesnât stay locked in 2013. New players can get their foot in the door â even if they miss the menu prompts.
