Winter Storms Claim 5 Lives in Gaza Amidst Desperate Living Situations in Makeshift Shelters.

Strong winter gusts brought walls down upon fragile tents sheltering Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four individuals. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after over two years of intense airstrikes and critical shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Offers Little Respite from Harsh Weather

Although a truce has been in effect since October, aid groups state that residents do not have the adequate shelter required to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, said on Tuesday that the dead were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"The world has allowed us to witness death in all its forms," said a family member following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three members of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a area near the sea of the city. At least five additional people were injured in the event.

Family members on that day began clearing the debris that had buried their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, tarps, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of the population reside in makeshift tents since their homes were turned into ruins during the hostilities. Aid groups contend an insufficient amount of shelter materials are entering Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, says over 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry maintains comprehensive fatality records that are considered largely accurate by UN agencies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that at least one hundred minors below eighteen years old – sixty males and forty girls – had been killed since the ceasefire began because of military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, represented cases where enough information had been compiled to justify recording, but the overall count is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'explosions and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not stopped," Elder told reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the international community now calls quiet would be considered a crisis in any other place," he concluded.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over two million people has been struggling to keep the freezing temperatures and storms at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently required during the winter months. It’s the third winter since the war involving Israel and the group began on a date in late 2023, when militants attacked southern Israel and murdered approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been killed in the subsequent military campaign.
